Dirt and its upmarket cousins offer a glimpse of how rising energy prices have caused inflation in the grittier corners of the consumer culture.
From the article:
Pricier dirt is what consumers want, says Bob LaGasse, executive director of the Manassas-based Mulch and Soil Council, which represents soil and mulch producers nationwide. "People have less time. So their garden projects have changed over time. Convenience, time-saving factors, less mess," he said. They want high-performance dirt, so charged with organic nutrients you could serve it as an appetizer.
"It's potting soil on steroids," said Chris Sexton, marketing manager for Fafard Inc., a major soil manufacturer in Anderson, S.C.
Do you want pricier dirt? At pricier prices?
Dirt is dirt...as long as it is very dark loamy soft and humid.
Let me add what I think it is appropriate for my purposes like pit moss, vermiculite, bone meal, fertilizer or insecticides.
That is the least we need...GOURMET DIRT.!!!
I do believe we have figured out the problem....Now we need to work as hard to figure out the solution to this oil problem. This will take some give and take on everyones part. It cannot be all one way or the other. When our Media shows photos or video of things it is usually pretty one sided, so I can only suggest that we take a longer look then decide. The final decision is going to last awhile. The old saying " Jumping out of the frying pan into the Fire" applies pretty well here . It may be hot in the pan but to jump into the fire is not to swift a move. I'm not saying not to make a change, but to make a smart and well thought out change; for instance where has this Ethonal thing lead us to? When Agriculture goes from Food to Fuel we lose. The Dollar signs are flashing and our political bunch jump right on the money train. Or Brains and minds are ours to use and the process is thought not blinded by the flashing Dollar Sign. This change thing as recently reinvented has me asking; what kind of change, how will this affrect our country, does it benefit the American people, no one is answering this. You only here that one word CHANGE, it is kind of hollow without some substance to it. Oil will not go away, but it can be supplamented with other fuels, which brings up more choices for us which is a good thing because we don't have to choose Oil every time. Please think about things, we need to get back to that. It sure saves on making a bunch of mistakes, which you have to go back and fix before going ahead again. Take Care....Ken Alling
I agree we need to think about ways to use oil alternatives. And to think about how many ways we use energy that are not really needed.
I still don't understand that potting soil has to be more than three times higher price than that a year ago, sure, you can added the fuel price increase but, still, I couldn't figure out, may be someone can figure out.
Inflation and oil price increase is a world wide problem,no one country can deal with this prolem alone, and in the meantime, each individual should come out a plan; try to deal with the imflation personnal. such as saving, and spend the money carefully. My be I was from a poor country like China, I do feel sometime most Americans are too wasteful and so used to live on high-actually, myself were so used to the high standard living like the most Americans too, until I became poor, and now I have learned how to live on low income, and live even much happier than before. I don't mean to ask everybody to follow my example; I just wish everybody to take easy and to be rational, to learn how to work harder, to learn how to be patience and to learn how to be conserve.
I have strong faith in this country; American will come out from this trouble water and the future is bright!
I know what you mean Peter. I'm visiting my sister, who is a physical therapist, yet lives very simply. Uses wood heat for instance, and picks up fallen wood, so even that isn't a purchase. Has an on-demand water heater, so only heats water when it's to be used. Composts to develop better soil. Great reminders to me.
So now the FED will want to raise interest rates, when the problem has nothing to do with interest rates, borrowing, or rising wages.
What I think is appropriate here is a big fat tax on energy companies and speculator hedge funds (in addition to require that they have .50 cents on every dollar they invest in energy, instead of the current .05 cents, and make them take delivery of any and all oil that they have bought up to this point), on top of rescinding any and all tax breaks they recieve. Anything to completely batter their stock price, and make them actually work for the money. We should also dump a crap pot load of oil from the Strategic Reserve onto the American market, while doing all of this over a matter of a couple of weeks
This should correct this energy induced inflation.
