From the article: My academic background is in Near Eastern and Judaic studies. Last year, my first as a teacher, I taught middle and high school Judaic studies at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville.

Last spring, I approached the school's administrators with the idea of teaching beginning Arabic as well as Jewish history. They were extremely supportive and offered me the opportunity to teach three Arabic courses this semester. I decided to do it for at least two reasons.

Communication begins with shared language. This program is one that is worth considering more widely in the US and elsewhere.

i speak 7 languages and can vouch for the effectiveness of such a program. when learning a language, one of the FIRST things you learn, right along with the alphabet of that language, is about the people and culture of the people that use that language... which to be is more valuable than the language itself.

Obviously, this is a local program, so could be considered a drop in the bucket, but I was glad to see an article about it. I hope that similar programs will spring up from this one.

Very nice post. By the way, the Hillel at my university has been offering free Arabic classes for at least a year now. I have been hoping that an Islamic community or group (such as the Muslim Law Students Association) might reciprocate the gesture...

I myself plan on learning Hebrew one day... as soon as I really nail down the more complicated Arabic grammar structures I have been struggling with lately... =)
